UPDATE ON THE STATE OF DRINKING WATER IN THE ABSENCE OF RAIN (02/08/2024)

The Town Council of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell informs its residents that in the water analyses taken last week within the scope of the Teulada – Benitatxell Water Consortium, an excess of the element sodium has been detected, derived from the intrusion of sea water that we are suffering due to the current drought, as has been the case since last July, when the relevant notifications were already made by the Town Council.

Currently, in the case of the water available to the residents of Benitatxell, this excess is still within the thresholds that determine that the water continues to be drinkable, but with excess sodium, which limits its use to be consumed only by people who have a medical recommendation for low sodium diets.

We remind you that the scope of the Teulada – Benitatxell Water Consortium is a very complex hydraulic system, where the characteristics of water potability may vary by area, since there are different catchment points, treatment plants and reservoirs. For this reason, the case of Benitatxell is, for the moment, slightly different to that of Teulada, where the Town Council has announced restrictions in specific areas.

Benitatxell receives 30% of European funding for municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants in the province of Alicante. 05.07.24

The town, which has received 4.8 million from the Reconstruction, Restructuring and Resilience Plan, tops this ranking.
More than half of the municipality’s annual budget, more than 1,000 euros per inhabitant or, in absolute terms, more than 4.8 million. This is the amount that the government team of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell has received in European funds since the European Union launched the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan in 2021.

According to the Institute of Economic Studies of the Province of Alicante (INECA), the town ranks first in the list of municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants in the province of Alicante. The 4,860,528.09 euros correspond to 30% of the total 16.3 million euros allocated to the 23 municipalities in this category.

“The fact that a small municipality with an annual budget of 8 million euros has achieved this amount in less than three years reflects the great technical effort that has been made both internally and externally,” says Mayor Miguel Angel García. According to García, this puts Benitatxell ahead of neighbouring towns with many more inhabitants and resources, such as Xàbia (€367,478 in European funding), Calp (€2,290,791), Teulada (€2,100,737) and Benissa (€2,957,532).

This sum of European funds has been distributed among five plans: the access control to the Bay of Moraig (€252,685) and the replacement of traditional lampposts with LED technology (€501,465), which have already been implemented; the Tourism Sustainability Plan (€2,441. 513), which is currently in progress; the renovation of the municipal market (€700,346), for which the tender was unsuccessful and the process will be repeated; and the future semi-pedestrianisation of Mayor and Mercat streets and the adaptation of a park-and-ride car park on Xàbia street next to the cemetery (€785,921).
